The women’s game locally really blossomed in the 1990s when several outstanding players were produced and many went on to win GB honours.
Interest in the sport fizzed in recent years, BUT a dedicated group of volunteers, backed by Barrow Island RL members are now looking to put that right.
They are well on their way to forming a new club, Barrow Ladies RLFC and held their first training session on Island’s Rating Lane home, under floodlights last week.
After putting out an appeal to set up a women’s team, the response has been fantastic.
The club plan to start a ladies team this year and then back-fill the age groups to enable females to continue playing after 12’s.
Barrow Ladies are appealing for help with sponsors and anyone interested in signing up or wanting more information can contact Jenny Doherty on 07881 303907.
Training is held every Tuesday at Barrow Island ARFLC – 6:30 start.

Furness Firecrackers Roller Derby League are still desperately in need of a suitable home venue (10,000sq ft).
Can you help them?
Firecrackers need a smooth floor, typical wooden sports hall type is the best but smooth hard plastic, or concrete is just as good.
Anything rough obviously isn't suitable.
They would be looking at using it 4 - 5 times a week. Room for spectators would be a bonus so they can host home games again but even if they could find somewhere to train on a full track, they could forgo spectator room. Can you offer them somewhere? If you can, please contact Barrow Sports Council or Furness Firecrackers.
Thanks to Hindpool Tigers who recently have donated 5 rugby kits to our Kits to Malawi Appeal. The kit will go to one of the poorest areas on the planet.
Hindpool Tigers Secretary Phil Cubiss and Chair Graham Shaw are seen here presenting the kit to Sports Council secretary Charlotte Whitwell.
If you club has any spare kit for any sport, we would be happy to have them.
