Indoor disability football sessions

Barrow Sports Council and Barrow AFC are now running weekly football sessions for young people with a disability.

The sessions are at DASH @ Dowdales which is a very disabled friendly venue on the Dowdales School site at Dalton.

Sessions will be every Tuesday in term time from 5pm to 6pm and cost £1 per person.

Coaching is provided by the Barrow AFC Community team.  The sesions are subsidised by a donation from the Shorty Shaw Festival.

There is no need to book but if wish to book in advance or want more information, please contact Craig Rutherford on 07816163346 or by email

Wheelchair sports with Furness Wildcats

The sessions take place Monday evenings 5.30 to 6.30pm (term time only) at Hoops Basketball Centre, Thorncliffe Road. The club is for children with disabilities and their families.   We play different wheelchair sports each week, including rugby, basketball, cricket, hockey, netball and football.  If you don't want to join in the main session, we also have other games available.

You don't have to be a wheelchair user to take part - we have chairs available for up to 20 participants each week.

If you are interested in joining the club, please email Nicola or come along to one of the free sessions every Monday evening from 5:30-6:30pm.

Donation from Shorty Shaw Festival

Barrow Sports Council has received a donation of £1,032.50 to help provide activities for children with a disability.
The donation was presented by Dalton United from the proceeds of the Stuart 'Shorty' Shaw Football Festival. The Festival was held in July in memory of the local footballer who died in a car accident earlier this year.

In recognition of Stuart's love of sport, Stuart's family asked for half of the funds to go to support sport for disabled children.
Our thanks go to Stuart's family and Dalton United and we will make sure the money is well spent. The donation will help to support a range of free sports activities including our disability football sessions at DASH @ Dowdales.

The other half of the fund was donated to bereavement charity, the Bluebell Foundation.

Sunbeams at Ormsgill - Wednesdays in the holidays

Parents and Carers Forum

Parents and carers of disabled children getting together for support and change

We welcome all parents/carers of disabled children to come and join us.

We meet every few weeks to discuss how to improve the lives of our children and ourselves.

We work with providers of services to ensure they meet the needs of our children.

We help to promote positive opportunities available for our children.

And we provide support to each other.

If you are the parent or carer of a child with a disability, please feel free to join us.

Our next Parents and Carers meeting will be the week after half term.  Date to be confirmed shortly.

We had agreed to alternate between evening and afternoon.  More people have attended the evening meetings but we thought we would give the afternoon another go and give people more notice.  For further information contact Derek Brook on 407575.

MAX Inspiration at the Youth Gym at the Park Leisure Centre

Sunday 10.30 to 11.30am @£2.50 a session

All children taking part in these sessions MUST be accompanied by a parent, guardian, carer or responsible adult.
This person must also stay with the child throughout the session as they are responsible for making sure the child exercises safely.

The Park Leisure Centre will not be having a dedicated member of staff working in the Youth Gym at this time.

However, the staff member working in the Adult Gym will be available to assist or offer advice when necessary.

If attending the MAX Inspiration sessions for the first time please make it known to the instructor on duty that they need to demonstrate how all the equipment works.

This will be monitored for a few weeks to make sure it works successfully.

Further information is now available on the Park Leisure Centre website

Not sure if this is for you?   If you would like to visit the Youth Gym first to see it it is suitable, give the Park a ring on 871146 and ask to have a look around first.

 Sports Clubs

The Sports Development Team is here to help sports clubs and organisations become more inclusive of people with disabilities. Here are some of the benefits of becoming inclusive, that may encourage you:

  • Increased membership
  • More awareness in the community of the club and its achievements with an improved ability to attract sponsorship
  • More people to become involved as volunteers. People with disabilities have many skills to share, often in areas where it is difficult to find a willing person, such as administration
  • Professional and personal development of club members as they share new skills and knowledge about their sport with the new members with disabilities
  • Better facilities that are safer and more user friendly

With some flexibility, imagination and a little effort, your club could enjoy some of these benefits.  If you want some help to become more inclusive, contact Derek on 407575.

The English Federation of Disability Sports (EFDS) has just produced a free booklet to help clubs to engage with disabled people.

Visit the EFDS website here or download the document as a pdf file here.
