Funding.

Barrow Sports Council grants

Barrow Borough Sports Council gives away nearly £20,000 a year in grants.  (This is mainly provided by our partners Cumbria County Council and Barrow Borough Council.)

This money is used to assist sports groups and individuals from Barrow Borough to:

  • Increase levels of participation, especially amongst young people
  • Increase and improve the use of sports facilities
  • Increase opportunities for all, regardless of age, sex, ability, disability, or ethnic origin.
  • Increase opportunities to improve skills and performance

The Sports Council meets approximately every six weeks. These dates can be found on the About Us page. We ask applicants to submit their applications at least one week before the appropriate meeting.  However, we do try to be flexible.  If you need a grant as a matter of emergency, we have a grants sub group which can meet at short notice.  This is usually used when individuals are selected at a national level and they need funding as soon as possible.  Clubs require a sports development plan so we would hope club applications will not be an emergency!

There are many other sources of funding for sports projects.  If you are new to seeking funding, you might find it useful to click here for a simple guide to the main sources of funding in the Barrow area.  If you need any help, contact a member of our Sports Development Team

Some people and clubs we have helped recently

'Askam RLFC would like to thank Barrow Borough Sports Council for their support in sport and their partnership approach they have to the community at large that they have given in the last 12 months.
Which without support like that the progress of the Club and achievements of the teams such as the Under 16s Scholarships to Whitehaven, Workington and St Helens and also the Under 12s in their Treble victory in FCA League and Knock-out Cup and the Cumbria Cup, would have been so much harder to do.'

Hindpool Touch Festival

Hindpool National family week Touch festival proves to be big hit.
Sunday 6th June saw a touch festival take place at Hindpool ARLFC between several local amateur clubs. The day saw the teams compete in a round robin type festival with all clubs playing each other once then going into the finals.
The touch festival was the second of 6 festivals, which are sponsored by Barrow Sports Council, to take place in the South Cumbrian district. The numbers had grown from the previous festival held at Walney and hopefully it will continue to do so for future events.
The group games were close with both Barrow Island and Roose Pioneers making it to the final from a five team strong competition. The final was close but Barrow Island came out victorious.
The next festival will be held at Barrow Island ARLFC on Saturday 19th June. For more information on future events, contact Matt Jefferson on 07775 022799 or matt.jefferson@rfl.uk.com

Barrow Borough Sports Council has awarded Walney Central ARLFC - £1043.98

The club has formed a new U18’s team to play in the Cumbrian League.
The league is to sustain Cumbrian youth interest in the sport and to bridge the gap between the under 16s and open age sections.

There are many more examples of success here.
