The benefits of regular participation in sport and physical activity have been widely supported. However, despite the many campaigns promoting the health benefits of sport and physical activity, participation rates remain low in some groups.
Only a fifth of women in the UK are doing enough exercise to be healthy and therefore, there is a need to engage with more women and girls in sport.
A local Steering Group has been established to look at holding a Women’s Sports Development Day next year. The event would provide women and girls with the opportunity to participate in some sports, whilst also promoting opportunities for women and girls. The provisional date for this event is Sunday 14th June 2009.
If you or your organisation or sports club would like to be a part of the day, please come along to the next Steering Group meeting. This meeting will be held on Thursday 6th November 2008 at 6pm at Barrow AFC’s ground on Wilkie Road.
Please confirm your attendance by e-mailing emma.broadbent@cumbriacc.gov.uk or by calling 01229 407319

Get Active!
‘Health of Britain - Perspective on Nutrition 2008’
According to the recent study, ‘Health of Britain’, just 12 per cent of the population eats 5 fruit and vegetables a day.
On average, people in Britain eat two-and-a-half portions a day, but 12 per cent do not eat any fruit and vegetables at all.
Giles Quick, of global market insight group TNS, who conducted the research, said: "While the need for 'five-a-day' seems to be common knowledge, the number of us who actually achieve this is shockingly low."
Our 5ive and 5ive project helps to address this by providing a free Diary to monitor your eating and exercise. It also includes manay top tips and useful contacts. Most people who use it say it helps them to keep motivated to make a change.
Why not pick up a copy of our 5ive and 5ive Diary now? Download it from the 5ive and 5ive page on our website or email lis.stephenson@cumbriacc.gov.uk and we’ll send you a free copy.
If anyone is interested in their children playing rugby union in the winter, training is now on a Sunday at 11am till 12.30pm for 6 -11year olds
All the coaches are CRB Checked and Darren Holt has said he will help out at training sessions.
This is an excellent way to get children playing rugby There is not much difference between union and league at this level so why not give the children a chance to play rugby all year round just like football do? The first game is the end of next month.

It is now easier to apply for SPORTSMATCH. You can now apply online at www.sportsmatch.co.uk
Even better, your matched funding does not have to be from a business. Match funding can now come from charitable trusts and private individuals, as well as companies (the latter being the only way previously).

The minimum amount that can sports-matched is £1,000 (£500 for schools) and the maximum £50,000 i.e. this would double to £100k.
